Juruti Sustainability School
The objective of the Juruti Sustainability School, which was set up in March 2009, is to provide professionals and leaders of civil and governmental organizations with the qualifications and skills they need to develop sustainable initiatives in the region. The School, which is something unique in this town in Para, was the brainchild of and is directed by the Peabiru Institute - an NGO with vast experience in the Amazon region - for providing sustainability agents with skills. Funds for the scheme are being donated by the Alcoa Foundation and the Alcoa Institute.
Lessons for the first group of students started in April 2009 and were organized in four modules: Mobilizing funds for social projects; Public management; Management of the third sector; and an end of course paper. In this first stage 30 representatives from 15 different public and not-for-profit private organizations in the region will be trained. The course lasts for 10 months and will comprise 300 hours of lessons, which will be given by teachers form the Peabiru Institute that will issue the end-of-course certificate.
