To bring about improvements in the quality of life by investing in infrastructure, Alcoa, in partnership with the Municipal Administration of Juruti and in agreement with the community, prepared and introduced the Positive Agenda. With investments of R$ 50 million the package of actions includes rural and urban infrastructure, health, education, culture the environment, public security and social assistance. It is a set of voluntary actions on the part of the Company that has been agreed directly with the community, following public hearings that resulted in the license being granted for setting up the Juruti Mine.

Health – Basic Health Units have been built in the Palmeiras and Maracanã districts, in addition to Mixed Units in Vila Muirapinima (or Juruti Velho) and in Vila Tabatinga. All the health care units that have been built or refurbished were furnished, fitted out with instruments and fully equipped with medical technology. At present the Juruti Community Hospital is also being constructed, which will be a benchmark in medium and high complexity medical care.

Security and justice – To meet the needs of security and justice the town’s civilian police station was refurbished and extended and living quarters were built for the local uniformed police. To improve aspects of road safety a traffic flow system was defined for company vehicles in the center of town, thus reducing traffic flow on the busiest roads. The Juruti Legal Complex was also built, with a Court House and three official houses for the judge, the public prosecutor and the public defense attorney.

Education and culture – The Municipal Administration received funds for it to build 16 new classrooms in public schools; the building work is currently underway. In the Positive Agenda for 2010 there are plans to build a Juruti Culture House that will be home to exhibitions, cultural workshops, events and also the town’s archeological treasures.

Urban and rural infrastructure – In the rural areas, among the works already completed those that stand out are the improvements in existing roads, the opening up of new access roads to the Lago Preto region, the local road network in Cipó, the local road network in Socó II, 17 km of main road to the Batata community and bridges over the Branco River and the Santo Antônio creek. Part of the PA-257, PA-192 and PA-260 highways that provide access to the Juruti Mine’s beneficiation area, has been paved; there is now a total of 55 km of main roads that are in a great state of repair, thus improving traffic in the communities located in the municipality’s uplands region.

In the Juruti urban areas, the highlight was the contribution made to the preparation of the town’s Participative Master Plan. A water supply micro-system was built in the Bom Pastor district, which also received drainage work. Deep wells were drilled in the Santa Rita and São Marcos districts and in the center of town, to provide inhabitants with water. Two garbage compacter trucks were donated to the Town Administration.
