Benefits for the communities of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina

BAESA is working with the communities in those areas that surround and are close to the undertaking, helping introduce improvements on an ongoing basis. A lot of progress has been made in improving the living conditions of the local population since the power station started being built, a fact which has introduced a new socio-economic panorama for municipalities in the two states.

The company has invested R$ 6 million in the areas of health, education, public security, social assistance, infrastructure and leisure, in addition to helping boost the GDP in 26 communities located in Santa Catarina and 22 in Rio Grande do Sul.

To get an idea of some of the changes that have occurred in the municipalities, in October 2005 the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) published a list of the towns with the biggest growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2002, and Pinhal da Serra (RS) was first in the wealth-growth ranking in Brazil.

The municipality grew by 566.35 % relative to 2001. Its wealth went from R$ 15.6 million in 2001 to R$ 104 million in the following year. This was due, among other factors, to the construction of the power station, the investment in which was more than R$ 1.5 billion and which created 5,000 direct and indirect jobs that have benefited the Serras Gaśchas region and Santa Catarina.

Professional training is another important factor for guaranteeing the self-sustainability of the families affected by the undertaking. In October 2005, BAESA agreed a partnership arrangement with the National Commercial Apprenticeship Service (Senac) in Lages (SC). In doing so the company and Senac will retrain people to work in commerce and service provider companies in the municipalities of Pinhal da Serra (RS), Esmeralda (RS) and Anita Garibaldi (SC).
