In Alcoa, funds earmarked for the third sector are, as a priority, directed towards those institutions and programs in which company employees take an active part. This is why in 2002 the Alcoa Foundation created BRAVO!, a worldwide program for encouraging and recognizing the efforts of volunteers.

Through this program every employee who does 50 hours voluntary work during the year, outside his/her normal working hours, receives a US$ 250 donation for the institution for which they work.

In 2007, program volunteers notched up more than 202,000 hours of voluntary work in Brazil, for a total of US$ 1,011,000 donated to more than 500 institutions. In Brazil, 67% of the employees (more than 4,000 volunteers) did more than 50 hours voluntary work outside normal working hours.

The champion location in voluntary work within the BRAVO! Program was Alumar, the Maranhão Aluminum Consortium, with an 86% participation by its employees, followed by Poços de Caldas (MG), with 83% and Tubarão (SC), with 80%.

The funds earmarked for the third sector are, as a priority, directed towards those institutions and programs in which company employees take an active part. There is a double benefit: the hours dedicated to the work by the volunteer and the financial resources obtained by the institution or program.
