Alcoa is encouraging innovative aluminum
projects and increasingly contributing to sustainable development
University students from all over Brazil compete for the Alcoa prize, which
this year is drawing on the creativity of students from a wide range of
disciplines
Since 2002 Alcoa has been awarding prizes to young university students for the
innovative projects they produce using aluminum. The aim of the competition is
to encourage the development of new products and applications for the input, and
in doing so to reveal new talents and contribute to the sustainable development
of the aluminum production chain.
There are two already well-established categories from the previous four
editions of this prize; Project, in which new products and applications
in aluminum compete and Management Planning. A new category has been
introduced this year called Aluminum Recycling, the idea of which is to
receive creative solutions for developing this particular market
(post-consumption waste and/or waste generated in the production of consumer
goods).
But the new features do not end there. In this fifth edition of the competition
participating teams can be multidisciplinary, with students coming from
different courses, provided they all study at the same institution. Groups have
also been able to register in more than one category. In the case of teams, one
member must be chosen to be the group's representative. The student or winning
team in each category will receive a prize of R$10,000 and the professor-tutor,
R$5000. The college/university will receive teaching equipment worth R$5000.
The Alcoa Prize is also supported by important sector bodies, such as the
Brazilian Institute of Architects ('IAB'), the Engineering Institute, UniEthos –
Education for Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development, a
not-for-profit institution that focuses on research, knowledge production,
operationilization and training and development for the business and academic
worlds in these areas, the Higher Education Design Teaching/Research Association
in Brazil ('AenD-BR') and the Association of Product Designers ('ADP').
This year 773 works were enrolled, a number 19% larger than in 2005. Since it
was launched the competition has exceeded the organizers' expectations, with
participation growing year by year. In its first year 324 works were enrolled.
