The consistency of Alcoa’s responsible actions was yet again recognized by one of the main publications in the sector, Exame’s Sustainability Guide, which is produced annually by Editora Abril. This is the eighth time that Alcoa has featured among the companies with best practices in sustainability in Brazil. Exame’s Sustainability Guide is coordinated by the Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Center for Sustainability Studies. It evaluates the strategy and practices of companies in the areas of corporate governance (general), economic, social and environmental. Alcoa improved its performance compared with the previous year in all dimensions. The performance of those companies participating was also analyzed in the topics: human rights, ethics and transparency, water management, biodiversity management supplier management, waste management, sustainability governance, climate change, community relations and customer relations.
“Gold” Certification in the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program
For the fourth consecutive time Alcoa has won the “Gold” seal in the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program, relating to last year’s greenhouse gas emissions. The company is part of a pioneering group of 16 organizations that have been publishing their emissions since the program was first set up in 2008. The inventory, which is audited by the Vanzolini Foundation, an independent body, allows the sources and amount of company emissions to be identified. The results reported by Alcoa are the outcome of actions undertaken by the units, such as the conclusion of a project to improve our alumina production processes in the plant in São Luís (MA), which reduced PFC (perfluorocarbon) gas emissions by 63% compared to the previous year, which represents 44,000 tons of equivalent carbon dioxide. The plant in Poços de Caldas (MG), on the other hand, improved its energy efficiency by redesigning its casting furnace and substituting the use of fuel oil by natural gas, thus reducing CO2e by almost 6000 tons.
For the thirteenth year Alcoa is listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index
For the thirteenth consecutive year Alcoa has been included on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), one of the world’s most renowned sustainability indices. Alcoa was once again recognized as being the Leader in the Aluminum Sector. Considering all its units worldwide, 2013 was the company’s safest and most environmentally efficient so far.
