Social and environmental responsibility is one of the directives guiding all the decisions and activities of Ceste and it is expressed through the development’s operational actions. In all phases of the power station implementation project, in addition to complying with current Brazilian legislation, the Consortium’s priority was to prepare social and environmental programs and actions directed at reducing any interference from the undertaking. These would also help promote the sustainable development of those municipalities close to the Estreito Hydropower Station.
The programs developed were based on criteria like environmental preservation, the application of natural resources, valuing regional knowledge and culture and promoting social and economic sustainability. They include actions in environmental monitoring and management, the management of water resources, cataloguing and conserving fauna and flora, environmental education, support for commercial and service activities, fostering local production activities, tourism, handicrafts, urbanization and public security.
In 2010, the consortium made progress with the environmental programs of the Basic Environmental Project of the Estreito Hydropower Station. It strictly complied with the commitments it had assumed with regard to the environmental licensing of the development and with current Brazilian environmental legislation. When the reservoir started to be filled, Ceste intensified its social and environmental actions dedicated to this phase, such as property supervision, rescuing fauna, monitoring water quality and fish, and other initiatives.
