São Luís (MA) - Consórcio Alumar

Alumar (Consórcio de Alumínio do Maranhão) is one of the world’s largest complexes for the production of primary aluminum and alumina. Inaugurated in July of 1984, it is a consortium formed by Alcoa, Rio Tinto Alcan and BHP Billiton.

Alcoa has a stake in the two main businesses of the enterprise: smelting and refining.

Refining consists of producing alumina from bauxite. As for smelting, which is where the electrolytic process occurs, it is responsible for transforming alumina into primary aluminum.

The Alumar business model is based on the concept of sustainability. The company incorporates into its daily activities criteria that ensure financial success, environmental excellence and social responsibility.
