We believe that our success is linked to the health and well-being of the hundreds of communities around the world that host Alcoa plants and offices. These communities have always been the focus of Alcoa giving, both through Alcoa Inc., and through the non-profit Alcoa Foundation.
Because these places and the people who live there are so important to us, we strive to enrich them through grants, ideas, and our own donated time and effort.
In addition to grant-based activities, two global programs have been developed to recognize the volunteer efforts of Alcoa employees through special Alcoa grants. ACTION (Alcoans Coming Together In Our Neighborhoods) encourages Alcoans to work as a team to help a local nonprofit, while Bravo! recognizes individual employee volunteer efforts. Alcoa employees everywhere are participating in these programs to benefit the nonprofit organizations in their communities.
Through grants from Alcoa Foundation, Alcoa's Belgium locations have formed joint ventures with non-governmental organizations to help with environmental and educational efforts in the community.
Alcoa has four locations in Belgium-Paal (Alcoa Wheel Products Europe and Alcoa Service Center Belgium), Brussels (Alcoa Fujikura), and Erembodegem (Alcoa Fastening Systems). The main activities of Alcoa's 50 Belgian employees at these four locations are administration, sales, and distribution.
In 2004, Alcoa Foundation provided a US$10,000 grant to the Bosmuseum Gerhagen, which is part of the Werkgroep Ecologie Tessenderlo. The money will be used to organize a special 2005 exhibition on forest mushrooms and will include an educational component with regional schools.
A second 2004 foundation grant for US$5,000 was given to Natuurhulpcentrum Opglabbeek, a nature aid center in Opglabbeek. The money will help the group's volunteers continue their work with wounded animals and will support educating children on what they can do when they encounter an animal in trouble.
