Ocean Waves in Anodic Silver. Unusual Production Hall Design: attractive and weather resistant.

24 April, 2007
Barcelos is a small city in northern Portugal and the county town of the region also called Barcelos. The weather conditions there have little in common with the clichés that most people imagine for the southern part of that country. The winters are often rainy and windy – the long enduring sunshine associated with the South is a much less frequent guest.
Barcelos is known for the traditional “Galo de Barcelos” (Rooster of Barcelos) made of clay or ceramic. It is a colourfully painted rooster with two red hearts and numerous filigree patterns on each side. It is considered even today as the emblem of Portugal. Barcelos is also the headquarters of plastics maker Inove Plastika. The company created in 2005, produces plastic products for various areas of application. When the time came for the renovation of an existing industrial hall and expansion into its own new production hall, the company commissioned the recent architecture office of C+J making arq to handle the job. The building is in the middle of a rural region that prides itself on harmonious coexistence with nature; the use of environmental friendly materials was therefore obvious. It quickly became clear that only aluminium could offer an optimal solution to the project specifications in addition to many other benefits. The project lead architects, César Fernandes and Jorge Brito, only two years beyond their initial start of the C+J making arq architecture office, were strongly against a “classic” industrial façade. On account of the location next to the ocean, they drafted a solution in which the facade design would remind the waves of the ocean. During the renovation planning, they decided upon Reynolux® Building aluminium products as they gather the various aspects of the project: weather resistance, environmental friendliness, freedom for creative design and ease of processing. Reynolux® Building is a coil-coated aluminium sheet that outstandingly suits for all building applications. In addition to the already mentioned strengths, the product also boasts a long warrantee period and a wide spectrum of coatings and colours. All this has made Reynolux® Building the product of choice for an ever increasing number of users in the roofing, facade and building accessory fields. Construction lasted from November 2005 to February 2006. 2,200 sqm of façade were totally cladded, including 820 sqm of perforated aluminium sheets from Reynolux® Building with PVDF 70/30 coating. The perforated sheets give the production hall a lightness and high-value impression that perfectly fits into the landscape and respect its harmony.
