Huge turn out for Wagerup Refinery Open Day

More than 1,000 people turned out for Alcoa’s Open Day at the Wagerup Refinery on Sunday, October 10.
Alcoa employees, their families, friends and many others from Harvey, Waroona, Bunbury, Mandurah and as far as Perth’s hills suburbs travelled to the refinery for the Open Day.
Wagerup Refinery Manager Bill Knight said the event was a huge success mostly due to the contribution from local people who attended and many dedicated community groups involved in organising the day.
The Yarloop Progress Group, Harvey Community Radio 96.5FM, Yarloop Bowling Club and Yarloop CWA, Waroona State Emergency Service, Australind Eaton Fire Brigade and the Waroona St John Ambulance were among those involved on the day. More than 600 people also took the time to tour the refinery, Willowdale mine and Alcoa’s farmlands.
As well as information, the Open Day provided plenty of activities for families including SciTech shows, a climbing wall, The Snake Man, a bouncy castle, fire engine rides and face painting.
A predicted increase in world alumina demand late this decade has presented Alcoa and the south-west region with a new opportunity to examine a third production unit at Wagerup.
An expansion would meet world-class health guidelines and address community expectations on health and the environment.
Alcoa is committing to delivering no increase in dust, noise or odour impacts on residents from a third production unit, which would add about two million tonnes a year of alumina production capacity.
Employees and the community in surrounding regions will continue to be fully engaged and informed on all aspects of the Wagerup 3.
