A view from the top

During a tour of Alcoa’s Australian operations, Alcoa Inc. Chief Operating Officer Mr Klaus Kleinfeld visited the Kwinana refinery and took the time to see some of the ways Alcoa is connecting with communities.

After visiting the refinery, Mr Kleinfeld visited the Spectacles wetlands, one of the community projects supported by Alcoa in this region.

Alcoa’s Kwinana refinery is working in partnership with the Town of Kwinana and other local stakeholders to support the indigenous tour program in the area which promotes the natural and cultural significance of the Spectacles.

Mr Kleinfeld was given an overview of the area from an indigenous perspective by local elders Theresa Walley and Leonard Thorne before taking a walk through the bushland to enjoy it first hand.

His October visit coincided with Alcoa’s Australian Global Month of Service, an Alcoa Foundation initiative, which supports and encourages employee volunteering.  Alcoa’s employee volunteer support program, matches employee time with a community grant, with more than $417,000 going to Australian community projects last year.

In 2006, 36,743 people were involved in Alcoa’s Global Month of Service activities, including more than 15,000 employees participating in 657 events across 36 countries.
