Miracle Metal Hits the Beach

Aluminium takes its place in the sun as the world’s most versatile metal is transformed into sculpture for tens of thousands of visitors to Cottesloe Beach this month.  Twelve aluminium sculptures feature in Perth’s sixth Sculpture by the Sea exhibition which is supported each year by Alcoa of Australia.

In this year’s exhibition, seven sculptures by Western Australian artists are made with Alcoa’s metal aluminium: George Haynes, John Hutchinson, Andrew Kay, Darius Kowal, Melanie Maclou, Derek Roach and Ian Young.

“This beautiful shining metal on the beach today started off as bauxite in the darling ranges,” Alcoa of Australia Managing Director Alan Cransberg said.

“It’s an amazing material, lightweight and versatile, and endlessly recyclable.”

Alcoa also partners Sculpture by the Sea in the 'Alcoa School Education Program' that sees over one thousand primary and high school children work with exhibiting artists in some 48 workshops over the three weeks of the exhibition.

“We bring around 400 kids up from our communities in the south-west for a day at the beach, sculpting and having fun,” Mr Cransberg said.

“They work with aluminium wire and some other materials, they have a totally unique experience, and they go home maybe thinking a bit differently about the world.

“It's all part of our Connecting with Schools program, that sees us take responsibility for educating our kids, and recognising them as central to our communities, and our future.”

Sculpture by the Sea runs from 4 – 23 March 2010.

Editors note:
Alcoa is Australia’s leading aluminium producer, and also operates Australia’s largest recycling facility in Yennora, NSW.  Aluminium is endlessly recyclable, and its lightweight properties applied in transport and construction make it an important part of our low carbon future.
