North Parmelia Primary School Safety Club Wins 2007 ICCWA Injury Prevention Award

North Parmelia Primary School Safety Club was named winner of the Injury Control Council of WA’s (ICCWA), Community Injury Prevention Award for 2007.  Director of the Office of Crime Prevention, Ms Wendy Murray, presented the award to students .. .. in November.

“This Award recognises the action and excellence of Western Australian individuals’ and community organisations’’ efforts and commitment to reduce the frequency and severity of injuries in their local communities” said Ms Deborah Costello, Chief Executive Officer, ICCWA.

“The leadership skills displayed by this team of dedicated students to improve safety and awareness around the school and within the community will not go unnoticed because of the difference they are making.  The example they have shown has been inspirational to both staff and students” said Ms Costello.

Under the guidance of teacher Angela Lutterell, North Parmelia primary school established their safety club as part of the KIDS Foundation and the Alcoa Foundation School Safety Club program.

The safety club’s aim is to raise awareness and introduce strategies that reduce risk to staff, students and families.  The students constantly promote the message “think safe, play safe,” said Ms Lutterell.

“The win came as a complete surprise and we were all very excited, but the students have worked hard and certainly deserve this recognition and I am very happy for them.”

The schools’ safety club activities have included Bike Safety Awareness, painting of visual prompts in the school to reduce the risk of injury resulting from running around blind corners, monitoring the ‘pick up, drop off’ car park to ensure that families adhere to the rules when picking up children, and introducing sun smart strategies that encourage their peers to be more conscious of the dangers of sun exposure.
