Alcoa Responds to CPRS Changes

Alcoa has advocated for the CPRS legislation to be amended and passed by Parliament, and we therefore welcome agreement being reached.

Some aspects of our concerns about maintaining the international competitiveness of Australia’s export industries have been addressed through the amendments, with a significant omission.
We are very disappointed that the electricity allocation factor (EAF) has not been resolved, ignoring our concerns consistently expressed over the past 12 months.
Without resolution on the EAF, our smelters will struggle to remain internationally competitive and the Government risks carbon and job leakage to other countries that do not run their smelters as efficiently as us.
It is critical this issue is resolved through the regulatory detail to ensure the sustainability of our two Victorian aluminium smelters and associated Australian jobs. As such, we will continue to pursue this through the regulations process over the coming weeks.
