Alcoa Response to Action on Carbon

Alcoa supports an economy-wide response to the challenge of climate change.  Regardless of the mechanism used, it is essential the Australian response does not diminish the international competitiveness of Australian industries which would simply lead to job losses and the transfer of emissions to other countries.

A carefully designed carbon price can achieve both imperatives - an effective economic response to climate change that incentivises improvements while preserving the international competitiveness of important Australian industries – we believe this is what parliament should seek to achieve.

Alcoa MD, Alan Cransberg said “Regardless of the approach taken, it is critical that Government’s climate change response ensures the sustainability and growth of what are world class alumina and aluminium assets in Australia. This is particularly important for the many regional communities that rely on the continued success of our industry.”
