Brigade prepares for bush fire season

With the bush fire season almost upon us, the Singleton Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade spent a weekend making sure their own backyard was clean and tidy, and they were ready for action.

Steve Leavy, brigade captain by night and Alcoa employee by day organised the clean up, bringing his workmates together with brigade members to reap the local station an Alcoa ACTION grant of $3,000.

The station can seem like a second home to volunteer fire fighters during summer months, so having a nice place to wind down and de-brief after a fire is important, said Steve.

“This day was about cleaning up and preparing for the season, which hopefully will be kind to us all.

“People should be taking time now to clear away rubbish and slash weeds from around their house and surrounding area, especially in the semi rural districts; this simple task can greatly reduce the rate a which a fire spreads.”

Singleton Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade has 30 volunteers and covers the area east of Mandurah Road and south of Stakehill Road within the City of Rockingham.

The brigade also works with other local brigades and FESA during emergency situations.
