Apprentice Award evening

Alcoa trained apprentices have always been in great demand, but with the shortage of tradespeople in Australia, there has never been a better time to qualify as a tradesperson.

Alcoa’s graduating apprentices were congratulated and passed out by Kwinana Contractor and Maintenance Services Manager Domenic Boni, an Alcoa apprentice himself 30 years ago.

Apprentice coordinator, Jim Bennett took the opportunity to reminisce about the group saying, while they are now just about worth their weight in gold, like anything worthwhile, it isn’t always smooth sailing.

“Over four years everyone becomes like a family; some times are just fantastic, and other times can be a challenge, but seeing the apprentices develop into adults is very rewarding for me personally and for Alcoa.”

Aaron Simcock was named the Alcoa Kwinana 2007 apprentice of the year and is already working as a tradesperson, with all the other graduating apprentices contemplating a bright future.

Alcoa’s apprentice training programme has trained 1100 West Australian tradespeople and currently invests over five million dollars each year on apprentice training.

Alcoa’s contribution to apprentice training was recognised by a 2005 Federal Government Award for Excellence.
