In celebration of World Environment Day (5 June) Alcoa World Alumina Australia welcomed its new fleet of Toyota Prius, making it one of Australia’s first corporations to switch to the technologically and environmentally advanced hybrid fuel-electric vehicles.

Alcoa‘s Director of Western Australian Operations Giulio Casello said there were many good reasons why Alcoa made the switch foremost were the environmental benefits, but fuel economy was important as well. “We made the decision to switch our fleet to Toyota Prius for safety and environmental reasons. It is Toyota’s most environmentally advanced vehicle and it was one more way Alcoa could make a contribution to better air quality,” Mr Casello said. “Alcoa has a global commitment to reduce greenhouse gas and each of our operating locations is constantly looking for opportunities to do so. For our management group at our corporate head office in Booragoon, WA, their contribution was choosing cleaner, more efficient fleet vehicles.” Toyota’s Fleet and Government Sales Manager (WA) Alan Livsey said Toyota had been perfecting hybrid technology since 1977 and the Toyota Prius was the first to use the Hybrid Synergy Drive system. “Hybrid technology is about getting back to nature. Humans and other animals store energy temporarily so they can access it quickly when needed. Our hybrid technology saves fuel in exactly the same way – storing energy and adjusting performance to suit conditions,” Mr Livsey said. By developing the Hybrid Synergy Drive system, Toyota’s Prius achieves almost twice the fuel efficiency of the 1.5 litre Carolla – the benefit - world leading environmental performance.
