Alcoa Wagerup alumina refinery’s donation of a redundant Mack truck to TAFE WA’s South West Regional College will go some way towards addressing a bigger problem for the state – a skills shortage in industry.

“There is currently a critical shortage of heavy duty mechanics in the state,” college portfolio manager John Barnes said. “Industry and the college have worked together to put strategies in place to address the problem and the college has now set up our heavy duty mobile plant/road transport training facility at the Sylvan Way Annex in Bunbury. “Industry, including Alcoa, has contributed to the success of the facility in a big way with donations of equipment and machinery.” College Heavy Duty Automotive Lecturer, Stan Badjo, was very grateful of Alcoa’s donation. “Having this truck will mean that our students can work on equipment that they will face when they enter the workplace. The donation of this truck will help make our students’ training the highest possible.” Wagerup Mechanical Workshop Coordinator, Gino Pisconeri said it was great to see the equipment going to the college. “This will help them build up the gear they need and it is also important given that the Wagerup refinery’s mechanical apprentices do part of their course down there,” he said. Charles Hull Contracting kindly transported the truck from Wagerup to the college.
