Alcoa’s Wagerup alumina refinery opened its gates to over 1,000 visitors on Sunday April 6, 2008. The free Open Day included tours of the Wagerup site, and a wide range of entertainment, activities and giveaways. Wagerup refinery manager Simon Butterworth said the Open Day was a great opportunity for the public to gain an understanding about Alcoa's operations, while enjoying a fun family day out. "It’s very important to us to be involved with our community, and for them to understand what the Wagerup refinery is all about,” Mr Butterworth said. “And it’s great to see all these families having such a fun time.” Families were able to find out more about the alumina refining process at the refinery, explore large equipment and take one of the popular bus tours to see the refinery site, farmlands operations and neighbouring local fresh producers.
Alcoa representatives were on hand to explain the mining and refining processes as well as the proposed expansion of the Wagerup refinery. “We’re always happy to talk about our operations. People appreciate knowing the full story about Alcoa and the key role we play in supporting our local communities,” Mr Butterworth explained. The Open Day also featured refreshments from local community groups, displays from local suppliers and Alcoa’s community partners including Greening Australia and the Chamber of Minerals and Energy.
