A total of 1215 Alcoa employees volunteered 71,147 hours of time to the community last year, working on 639 local projects across Australia.
Alcoa Managing Director Alan Cransberg said that in addition to investing $6 million annually in community-based programs and partnerships across the country, the company saw supporting employee volunteering as an essential element of community contribution.
"Our people are our most valuable asset and the contribution they make in local communities is critical," said Mr Cransberg.
"We have a global goal to see 40% of our people actively volunteering by 2020.
"As a company we are extremely proud to see our people giving back and are pleased to support their efforts through our volunteer matching program, which provided $325,000 in grants last year."
Alcoa’s volunteering program is formally supported through the Alcoa Foundation that matches employee volunteer time with grants to community organisations.
Through an annual Global Month of Service, employees around the world are encouraged to volunteer, and in 2007 more than 15,800 employees took part in 780 separate community events in 36 countries.
