Alcoa Employees go Native in support of National Tree Day

The backyards of Alcoa employees in the South West of Western Australia are set to receive a new burst of life as a result of Alcoa’s Employee Tree Day.

Every year, Alcoa holds an Employee Tree Day when each employee receives two native seedlings to plant in their own environment.  In 2008, Alcoa’s Employee Tree Day will coincide with National Tree Day which is held on July 27.

The Employee Days of Trees is an annual event which forms part of Alcoa’s Ten Million Trees Program. The Ten Million Trees Program was launched in 2003 to recognise the trees planted personally by Alcoa employees worldwide.

These trees are planted in addition to those used in revegetation programs that Alcoa routinely undertakes as part of its mine rehabilitation.

Ten Million Trees grew from the extremely successful One Million Trees program, which began in 1998 with the goal of fostering the planting of a million trees by Alcoa employees within ten years. This goal was quickly met and Alcoa raised the bar to Ten Million.

This event also supports local businesses and over 19, 000 of seedlings were purchased from the area.

Anika Wall, Environmental Scientist and Community Liaison Officer at Alcoa’s WA Mining Operations said “the event gives employees the opportunity to make an impact on their local environment by planting species which are more suited to our dry climate than many of the traditionally popular garden varieties.”
