Response to ACCC Gorgon Joint Selling Authorisation

Alcoa of Australia is disappointed with the ACCC’s decision to allow Gorgon partners Shell, Chevron and ExxonMobil to jointly sell gas, including setting prices, terms and conditions.

Alcoa, a member of the DomGas Alliance, is fully supportive of the views expressed by the Alliance (5 Nov 09) in relation to the ACCC decision, in particular the Commission’s seeming lack of regard to opposition by industry, power generators, infrastructure operators and gas consumers as presented in written submissions.
Alcoa, like the DomGas Alliance, is very concerned that in allowing some of the world’s biggest oil and gas companies to jointly sell gas to the well established Western Australian market, gas prices will rise dramatically for all consumers including small business and householders.
Western Australians already pay some of the highest prices in Australia for gas and today’s authorisation by the ACCC will see these prices increase significantly over the coming years.
