Alcoa and Greening Australia are holding a Local Food Safari event on Sunday, 4 December in the Shire of Murray.

A one day tour for local foodies, the event is part of the Make an Impact program that challenges communities and individuals to live more sustainably.
Tasting home-made ice-cream, picking ripe fruit and sampling the season’s fare are highlights of the tour.
It also includes a leisurely lunch at The Wine Tree, food demonstrations, a tour of local fruit and vegetable growers and talks by food and wine producers - many of whom are committed to sustainable, eco-friendly production.
Chris and Christine Birmingham own the almost 100 year-old Caraholly Orchard in Dwellingup, which they run with minimal intervention. “We grow peaches, plums, cherries, nashi pears and a novel new fruit called a pluott, which is an apricot plum. We’re looking forward to welcoming those on the food tour, who will really love our nectarines at that time of year,” says Christine.
“The Local Food Safari will be a fun day out and will help connect the community to local Shire of Murray growers and their produce,” says Grey Mackay from Greening Australia WA. “Buying locally grown food not only supports local farmers, it also reduces the impact on the environment.”
The event is open to anyone who would like to come along, but places are limited.
The cost is $30. The bus departs from the Pinjarra Heritage Train Station at 10am, returning at 4pm.
