Carbon Pricing

Alcoa has long recognised the need to respond to the challenge of climate change and has already made enormous gains in reducing its global greenhouse gas emissions, with our Australian operations playing a leading role in this through substantial efficiency gains.

Alcoa has consistently supported an economy-wide response to the challenge of climate change.

For several years Alcoa has emphasised that the Australian legislative response must not diminish the international competitiveness of Australian industries and drive business offshore to countries with no carbon price.

This can be achieved by properly recognising the risk to emissions-intensive trade-exposed industries such as ours.

Alcoa believes the legislation passed by parliament today seeks to achieve this balance. The challenge now before the government is to ensure the regulations underpinning the Clean Energy Future Bill are implemented in a way that preserves the competitiveness of Australian industry.
