Portland Aluminium EBA Negotiations

Negotiations with the Australian Workers’ Union (AWU) for a new Portland Smelter Operator’s Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA) began in November 2010.

The Portland Smelter Operators EBA covers around 360 employees. Portland Aluminium and the AWU continue to negotiate in good faith.

On Friday 6 May 2011, the AWU was granted permission by Fair Work Australia to hold a protective action ballot to enable employees to vote on whether or not they wish to take industrial action. The ballot commenced on 17 May, in accordance with the Fair Work Act, and will be managed by the Electoral Commission.

Portland Aluminium has plans in place to minimise any impact on the business if industrial action eventuates.

Portland Aluminium is committed to negotiating EBAs that are fair to employees, by maintaining competitive salaries and working conditions, and to the company, by making sure the business can remain competitive in a global market.

The company has offered improved conditions, including an 11% pay increase over three years. It is anticipated that the AWU will present the fundamentals for a new EBA to its members for consideration in the near future.

The pay and conditions for employees under the expired EBAs are continuing.
