Alcoa Point Henry takes ACTION at Buckley Falls

This Thursday (26 August 2010) a twenty year  tradition will continue as 10 Alcoa employees join forces with the Friends of Buckley Falls volunteer group and Greening Australia to continue the revegetation of Buckley Falls Park on the banks of the Moorabool and Barwon Rivers.

For over two decades, employees from Alcoa’s Point Henry operations, under the guidance of the Friends of Buckley Falls, have worked together to help vegetate the Falls area and community parkland on the Barwon River.

Buckley Falls form part of the Barwon River and is a marvellous refuge for the community of Geelong to walk, cycle, fish or just relax and enjoy the wonderful sight of water cascading over the Falls.

The volunteers will be assisting with weed removal and ground preparation, before planting indigenous tube stock with tree guards and mulching.

In addition, the Friends of Buckley Falls group received a $3,000 grant to help with the activities.  The grant was awarded from the Alcoa Foundation’s ACTION program.  ACTION (Alcoans Coming Together in Their Neighbourhoods) is a program developed by the Alcoa Foundation to recognise the collective efforts of Alcoans in communities where they live and work.  The Foundation rewards initiatives where 10 or more Alcoans choose to volunteer their time working together on a special community project.

Alcoa Point Henry Acting Smelter Manager Charlie Adornetto said that ACTION grants were an important part of Alcoa’s commitment to building stronger communities and that protecting and preserving the environment is a core element of Alcoa’s sustainability commitment.

“Encouraging and supporting our employees to volunteer is a key part of our commitment to the Geelong community and it is great to see so many of them helping out at these events.

“These events not only benefit the many people who enjoy Buckley Falls, but our employees who volunteer also get the opportunity to learn more about their community and to contribute in a practical way.”

Alcoa Foundation is a separately constituted not-for–profit U.S. corporate foundation with assets of approximately US$534 million. Alcoa Foundation’s mission is to actively invest in the quality of life in Alcoa communities worldwide.  Throughout its 55 year history, Alcoa Foundation has been a source of positive community change and enhancement, with nearly US$437 million invested since 1952.
