Alcoa cooks up a storm at Salvation Army Northside

Alcoa employees cooked up a storm for those in need when they helped out at Salvation Army Northside Geelong Community Centre.

The activity was part of Alcoa’s Making the Link program, which allows each employee one working day per year to spend helping out on a community project.

The community centre provides a broad range of services to disadvantaged people in need of support. Amongst its many services, each Thursday the centre provides an affordable, nutritious meal to members of the local community, which affords an opportunity for social engagement, friendship and fun.  Usually between 25 and 40 people attend lunch and avail themselves of a range of support and assistance programs.

Alcoa volunteers prepared lunch, chatted to clients and toured the facilities.

Alcoa Point Henry Operations Manager Stewart Esdale said “This service is vital for the community of Geelong. We are proud to support the Salvation Army as an organisation that provides essential services, especially in these tough economic times."

Captain Andrew Walton from The Salvation Army Northside said that Alcoa’s support will help them to provide for others and give current volunteers the opportunity to take a well earned break.

BacLinks Manager Sheree Holdsworth said, “It is encouraging to see support from business extending beyond financial contributions to participation at an employee level in community activities.  There are so many ways businesses can contribute to their local community from workplace volunteering and in-kind support to the sharing of resources and collection of goods. And they don’t have to be as large as Alcoa – everyone can provide something of worth to assist those in need in our community. The possibilities are endless” she said.
