Anglesea Playgroup Gets a Makeover

Alcoa Anglesea Power Station employees headed back to playgroup this week, when they joined forces with members of the Anglesea Playgroup to give their facility a makeover.

The volunteer effort was part of the Alcoa Foundation’s ACTION program.

ACTION (Alcoans Coming Together in Their Neighbourhoods) is a program developed by the Alcoa Foundation to recognise the collective efforts of Alcoans in communities where they live and work.

The Foundation rewards initiatives where Alcoa employees choose to volunteer their time working together on a special community project.  Each Alcoa Foundation project not only receives around 40 hours of labour, but also a US$3000 cheque to assist in sustaining their services into the future.

Treasurer of the Anglesea Playgroup, Katy Kennedy, said she was delighted with the grant and volunteer support.

“This is a fantastic program. Anglesea Playgroup is gaining momentum with lots of young families participating in the last two years in particular. Our facility was in need of assistance, and as a group we had struggled to find the time and the money to complete the work,” Ms Kennedy said.

“Alcoa not only supplied us with $3100 but also the arms and legs for the day to actually get the work done”.

“Freshening up the facility lets our current families get more enjoyment out of the space and positions it well for the future.”

The makeover included:

• Topping up sandpits
• Spreading tanbark
• General gardening
• Painting tables
• Sanding down furniture
• Cleaning windows
• Replacing flywire
• Rehanging doors
• Rehanging sunshade
• Oiling the outdoor table
• Putting together flat pack furniture

Alcoa Anglesea Manager Stephanie Pearce said ACTION grants were an important part of Alcoa’s commitment to building stronger communities.

“Encouraging and supporting our employees to volunteer is a key part of our commitment and it is great to see so many of them helping out today,” Ms Pearce said.

“It not only benefits the Anglesea Playgroup but also our employees who get the opportunity to learn more about the community in which we operate and to contribute in a practical way”.

“Alcoa values the volunteer efforts of our employees and their families and is very glad to be able to assist the Anglesea Playgroup, which is a vital service for young families in the area”.
