On the evening of Tuesday 6 July, the Anglesea and Aireys Inlet CFA brigades and local Victoria Police personnel joined Alcoa Anglesea Power Station’s Emergency Response Team to undertake breathing apparatus and rescue training exercises at night.

Five Alcoa employees, forty CFA volunteers, and four members of the police force, including the District Senior Sergeant, participated in the training. The mock scenarios involved smoke machines and fires in controlled environments and required personnel to wear specialised breathing apparatus as well as navigate challenging situations at night. This combined exercise provided all organisations involved with a unique training activity. Anglesea Power Station is the largest industrial facility in the local area and its structure and supporting infrastructure provide interesting mock rescue scenarios. This is the second training activity that the organisations have worked together on this year and builds on a strong legacy of shared training exercises with Anglesea CFA brigade over a number of years. The activity also assisted to familiarise the local emergency services groups with the Anglesea Power Station which would assist the plant greatly in the event of an emergency on site. Alcoa Anglesea’s Community Relations Officer, Anthea Doran said “It was a great opportunity for us to host so many local emergency response personnel at our site whilst also providing a unique learning environment to the crews and our employees. “We’ve worked with Anglesea CFA brigade in this manner for a number of years and it’s promising to see Victoria Police and Aireys Inlet CFA now involved. I believe it leads to better outcomes for all of us”, said Ms Doran.
