Portland’s Future Leaders of Industry launched

The 2010 Future Leaders of Industry Scholarship program, aimed at encouraging local students to consider the many and varied career opportunities available in local community, was officially launched last week at the Portland Golf Club.

The program, initiated in 2005 by Portland Aluminium, has continued to gather momentum over the years and now boasts nine local businesses partners supporting the leadership program.

Portland Aluminium Operations Manager John Osborne said the program was first developed to showcase local jobs in local industry and to assist PA in attracting, developing and retaining employees.

“We believe it is fundamental that we attract local young people into careers in industry by keeping them engaged in further education and training and helping them to develop their skills in the region.

“And it is great to see this principle also being shared by other industry and businesses in the region.”

The program has again has been co-ordinated by the South West Local Learning and Education Network with scholarships, mentors and sponsorship provided by: Portland Aluminium, Wannon Water, Keppel Prince Engineering, Glenelg Shire Council, Hatch Engineering, Port of Portland, Portland District Health, ECL Cranes and South West TAFE.

This year’s Future Leaders of Industry Program involves 16 students representing Heywood and District Secondary College, Bayview College and Portland Secondary College. Students will be mentored in fields such as Engineering, Human Resources, Public Relations, Pathology and Finance. The 2010 future leaders were recognised by their peers, schools, family and local industry at the recent breakfast.

The Scholarships include $500, which is held in trust by the recipients’ schools for the students to use for a range of educational activities such as school resources, workshops or future study.

During the duration of the program, spanning over the next three months, scholarship recipients will be introduced to various aspects of industry through a series of structured events, aimed at providing insight into how industry operates, around career paths and local opportunities as well as personal development.

A highlight of the launch was guest speaker Zoe O’Connell who was one of the original 2005 Future Leaders of Industry recipients. Zoe shared her experience participating in the program and the opportunities it has since provided.
