Portland Aluminium clarifies media article

The management of Portland Aluminium would like to clarify comments that appeared in the Portland Observer on 2 October.

Under the heading ‘No decision yet on smelter redundancies’ the article states that a decision on the next round of Victorian redundancies will be announced in mid-October. The comment actually refers to the Alcoa Victorian Operations staff restructuring process previously announced in early August and should have correctly stated that the activity is scheduled for completion in Mid-October. Portland Aluminium Manager John Osborne said the business continues to look for opportunities to reduce costs while difficult market conditions prevail but an announcement of a new round of redundancies is not planned for mid-October. “The impacts of the current downturn and high foreign exchange rate remain a challenge to our long-term sustainability. "As we have since the outset of the downturn we will continue to consult and communicate directly with employees as important business announcements arise and to identify opportunities to sustainably reposition ourselves for the long-term,” Mr Osborne said. Portland Aluminium regrets any concern or confusion this may have caused any employees and their families and will seek co-operation from the Portland Observer to clarify the matter.
