Safety the winner in PASL season

Safety and local charities were the winners in Portland Aluminium’s second annual Safety League, which wrapped up this week with a presentation lunch.

Kicking off in February, the safety initiative engages all areas of the plant in AFL-like football teams to battle it out on the health and safety field until September.

Masterminded by a former PA employee, the Portland Aluminium Safety League (PASL) initiative has been adopted by employees and contractors alike, emphasising and making the often serious topic of safety more fun and interactive.

The initiative not only promotes and rewards individual involvement in health and safety but also generates discussion around safety and allows employees to work together for external charity organisations.

Smelter Manager Mr John Osborne said the safety league was a fun way to get all employees involved and engaged in health and safety, while promoting and rewarding individual involvement.

“Safety is our number one priority, and we explore all avenues to ensure our employees are engaged and working safely wherever they, whatever they are doing.”

Proving more successful than their AFL namesakes, the AHEA Tigers this year took out both the prestigious PASL cup and the Contractors’ Cup, with their hard work on and off the field.

At the start of the season each team nominated a local charity that they wanted to play for.  With total prize money totalling $23,000 all the nominated charities received a minimum of $1,000 each.

The Portland Lions Club was the Tigers’ nominated charity, and will receive $5,000 as a result.

Lions Club President Jenny Simmonds said they were very impressed with the effort put in by the Hatch crew, improving the safety in their area.

“We plan to match the prize money and will donate it to the Portland Hospital.”
