Volunteers take ACTION to help Portland Little Athletics Centre

Portland Aluminium employees joined forces with members of the Portland Little Athletics Centre to prepare Nelson Park for the 2009/10 season.

The volunteer effort was part of the Alcoa Foundation’s ACTION program.

ACTION (Alcoans Coming Together in Their Neighbourhoods) is a program developed by the Alcoa Foundation to recognise the collective efforts of Alcoans in communities where they live and work.  The Foundation rewards initiatives where 10 or more Alcoans choose to volunteer their time working together on a special community project.  Each Alcoa Foundation project not only receives over 50 hours of labour, but a US$3000 cheque to assist in sustaining their services into the future.

President of the Portland Little Athletics Centre, Peter Gracias, said he was delighted with the grant and volunteer support.

“This innovative program is fantastic and has enabled us to undertake projects ahead of schedule to provide better facilities for young athletes in Portland,” Mr Gracias said

“Portland Aluminium played a pivotal role in the redevelopment of our long/triple jump pit and upgrade of our shot put and discus areas. Portland is very fortunate to have a corporate organisation that is sensitive to and supportive of local community needs. We also appreciate and applaud the dedication and commitment of the PA volunteers who made this possible.”

Portland Aluminium Operations Manager, John Osborne said that ACTION grants were an important part of Alcoa Portland Aluminium’s commitment to building stronger communities.

“Encouraging and supporting our employees to volunteer is a key part of our commitment and it is great to see so many of them helping out at this event,” Mr Osborne said.

“It not only benefits the Portland Little Athletics Centre but also our employees who get the opportunity to learn more about their community and to contribute in a practical way.

“Alcoa Portland Aluminium values the volunteer efforts of our employees and their families and is very glad to be able to assist the Portland Little Athletics Centre with their valuable work.”

Alcoa Foundation is a separately constituted not-for–profit U.S. corporate foundation with assets of approximately US$534 million. Alcoa Foundation’s mission is to actively invest in the quality of life in Alcoa communities worldwide.  Throughout its 55 year history, Alcoa Foundation has been a source of positive community change and enhancement, with nearly US$437 million invested since 1952.
