Background
The annual Future Leaders of Industry Scholarship Program aims to encourage Portland and Heywood students to consider the many and varied educational and career opportunities available in industry, with a focus on our local region.

Twenty two year 11 and 12 students from Bayview College, Portland Secondary College and Heywood and District Secondary College were chosen to participate in the program.

The program was introduced at Portland Aluminium in 2005 and this year has continued to grow with the coordination of Career Advise Australia, along with seven partner businesses – Wannon Water, Keppel Prince, Port of Portland, Portland District Hospital Pacific Hydro, Glenelg Shire and HATCH Engineering Alliance.  Each of the businesses sponsored a number of scholarships each, and provided mentors who were matched with the recipients.

The scholarships each comprise of:

  • $500 to be held in trust by the recipients’ schools and used to assist in schooling needs such as purchasing study aides i.e. text books computers etc, tuition fees or anything that the students feel will be of a benefit to them in their studies.
  • A series of interactive events that promote personal and professional development, further developing the recipients’ employability skills.
  • Scholarship recipients were matched with a Portland Aluminium or partner business employee who acted as a mentor to the student for the duration of the program.

Throughout the program, students have been introduced to various aspects of industry through structured events aimed at providing insight into how industry operates.  Events have included the ‘Introduction to Industry Day’; ‘Mentor Day’; ‘Careers in Industry Forum’; ‘Personal Development Day’; and a ‘Leadership Skills Day’.
