Planned Bakes Scrubber Shutdown

As previously reported Alcoa Point Henry’s $89m carbon bake upgrade was completed on schedule and commissioning commenced on 2 November 2007.

The project included the installation of a new fume treatment centre called the carbon bake scrubber. A 24 hour planned shutdown of the Bakes including the scrubber will occur on Tuesday 25 November from 05:00hrs. This maintenance activity is an important part of the carbon bake upgrade to ensure it is kept running to optimum performance levels. The Bakes rebuild and new scrubber has led to major environmental improvements including a significant reduction in PAH, VOC, carbon monoxide and metal emissions. To maintain the reliability of the scrubber, the planned shutdown will occur to allow key improvement and maintenance tasks to be undertaken in a safe manner. Alcoa is operating within our EPA licence which allows downtime such as for planned maintenance. The EPA has been advised of the activity. During the early hours of the shutdown period there may be some visible emissions from the Bakes scrubber stack. Detailed planning has been undertaken to ensure impacts to people and the environment are minimised.
