Geelong Cats superstar Joel Corey visited Point Henry today where he signed up employees to ‘Make an Impact’ and save water in their home for free as part of Barwon Water's WaterSecure Home program.

When he’s not maintaining sensational form for the reigning AFL premiers, Joel works with Barwon Water as a Sustainability Officer. Off the field, Joel encourages the Geelong community to save our precious resource through the water authority’s innovative water saving initiatives - many of them supported by the Alcoa Water Conservation Fund . One such initiative is the WaterSecure Home pilot project, developed by Barwon Water and supported by Alcoa, which is aimed at householders who want to save more water in their home. The program, initially targeted at 2,500 households in 2008, includes professional advice from a licensed plumber who visits homes to undertake a water audit, install water-saving devices and fix minor leaks. The total audit is valued at $180, but after Barwon Water and state government subsidies, customers are charged $30. The Alcoa Water Conservation Fund is covering the customer cost for community members who are Pension, Concession and Department of Veteran Affairs cardholders. As part of Alcoa’s Make an Impact program, Point Henry employees who have registered Make an Impact will also have the $30 customer charge covered by the Alcoa Water Conservation Fund. The average water saved per household after the audit is expected to be around 22KL per year which is great for the environment and for the hip pocket! After assessing the pilot program, Barwon Water intends to extend WaterSecure Home to the rest of its customers from 2009.
