Alcoa Community Heroes announced

Geelong Mayor Cr Bruce Harwood has named local Scout leader, Mr Stan Hughes, as the 2008 Alcoa Community Hero of the Year.

Volunteers from the Geelong region were recently recognised at a Civic Reception as part of the 2007/08 Alcoa Community Heroes Program.

The Alcoa Community Heroes program acknowledges local people and groups for outstanding volunteer work and encourages others in the community to get involved and make a difference.

Throughout the year, a weekly Community Hero is acknowledged in the Geelong Independent newspaper, with a monthly award recipient receiving $500 to donate to the organisation or charity of their choice. At the end of the program, all Community Heroes for the year are acknowledged at an annual Civic Reception where the annual award recipients are announced.

Awards included the Alcoa Community Hero of the Year, the Alcoa Team Community Heroes of the Year and the Alcoa Young Community Hero of the Year. The award recipients received $3000 for the organisation or charity of their choice, along with a plaque and a personal gift.   Annual category award recipients were also named, each receiving $500 for their organisation or charity of choice.

The 2008 Alcoa Community Hero of the Year is Stan Hughes from 1st Highton Scout Group.

Addressing the volunteers at the reception, Alcoa Point Henry Maintenance Manager Charlie Adornetto said Alcoa was proud to support such a worthy awards program that recognised the volunteering efforts of ‘our local heroes’.

“Alcoa Point Henry is committed to partnering stronger communities and is pleased to help reward those who contribute to making the region an even better place to work and live,” Charlie said.

The Alcoa Community Hero program is conducted in partnership with BayFM, the Rotary Club of Geelong, the Geelong Independent, United Way Geelong, Volunteering Geelong, BacLinks and Leisure Networks.
