Alcoa Anglesea – safety in numbers

In early June, Alcoa personnel at the Anglesea power station and mine site achieved one million hours worked without any employee suffering a Lost Work Day (LWD) injury.

The last LWD injury occurred over four years ago in February 2004, making this the longest period by far in the history of the plant that Alcoa Anglesea has remained LWD free. Acting Power Station Manager, Chris Rolland said, "It is a credit to the diligence of all employees that we have achieved this remarkable milestone. Special mention should be made of the vital contribution of crew safety representatives who help ensure that safety is at the forefront of all initiatives undertaken on site.” “The challenge facing us now is to continue to focus on safety and to maintain this performance through continual improvement of our safety systems to assist in our goal of an injury free work place.” One of Alcoa’s core values is to work safely in a manner that protects and promotes the health and well-being of the individual and the environment. “These values also extend outside our gates with Alcoa being a proud partner of the KIDS Foundation - a not-for-profit, health promotion charity dedicated to childhood injury prevention and injury recovery,” said Mr Rolland. The partnership focus in 2008 is about ongoing dedication to improving safety in schools; supporting KIDS Foundation’s National Injury Free Day in schools and at work on 24 October during national safety week; and employee attendance at the Burn Survivors’ Network Camp Phoenix in early August. Alcoa Anglesea and Point Henry also donate $100 and $1500 per week respectively to the KIDS Foundation for every recordable injury free week they have on-site. Anglesea doubled their 2007 contribution to $10,400 for remaining recordable injury free for the whole year. Alcoa Anglesea employee Mark Bolleman is also aiming to raise over $5000 to donate to the KIDS Foundation as part of the group’s Charity Challenge in October where a team of approximately 25 people will be heading to Nepal to trek the Langtang Valley in the Himalayas. KIDS Foundation CEO Matthew Stevens said, “The KIDS Foundation receives significant funding from Alcoa to support our injury prevention and injury recovery programs. But more importantly we have secured the most passionate ambassadors by engaging Alcoa employees in the activities initiated by the organisation.” “Alcoa employees have taken ownership of the partnership and promote the KIDS Foundation to their families and local communities. Raising community awareness to the Foundation through Alcoa has allowed us to reach and provide programs and support services to thousands of children and their families around Australia.” For more information contact the Community Relations Officer, Dave Ryan on 03 5263 4249 or david.ryan2@alcoa.com.au
