Power Outage at Portland Aluminium

On Wednesday 18th June at approximately 9:00pm Portland Aluminium experienced a site wide power outage resulting in extended outages to both potlines.

Potlines one and two were temporarily shutdown for three and a half hours while emergency procedures were enacted across the site. Plant "black" recovery procedures were implemented to restore environmental fume systems, plant compressed air and process control infrastructure to allow the progressive re-start of the potlines. As a direct impact of the outage, four smelting cells have been lost. The response of both the resource groups and the rostered shift employees has been exceptional, and the site has praised all employees involved for their efforts and support. As planned, normal setting and tapping processes commenced on night shiftThursday 19th June, with no further losses of any smelting cells and potroom process stability has continued to improve. Repairs to line two 500vK have been completed by SPAusnet and the line has been restored to normal operating condition.
