Alcoa Point Henry Smelter Operations Manager Stewart Esdale said the Alcoa Future Leaders of Industry program provides students with an insight into the manufacturing industry while also helping to raise the profile of manufacturing in the Geelong region.

“The Alcoa Future Leaders of Industry program is designed to encourage young people to consider a career in manufacturing and follow a study path which could lead to employment opportunities in the manufacturing industry in the future,” Mr Esdale said.

“Scholarship recipients will engage in a variety of activities during the program including work placement, an industry tour of supporting companies, a “Buddy Day” where participants are paired up with an employee at one of the supporting companies, a communication skills training day and a university/TAFE day.”

“The scholarship program demonstrates a real commitment by the Geelong manufacturing industry to providing further education and training opportunities to local young people. By keeping young people engaged in further education and training, and helping them to develop skills attractive to employers, we are building our community capacity and social capital.”

GRVEC’s Executive Officer, Lynne Clarke, said the program was part of the Federal Government’s Career Advice Australia initiative which is designed to engage students in careers in manufacturing, particularly in the Geelong area.

“The 2006 and 2007 Alcoa Future Leaders of Industry Scholarship Programs were an outstanding success for all involved and this contributed to its continued expansion in 2008,” Ms Clarke said.

“This year, there are 25 scholarship winners from 11 Geelong schools and 17 supporting employers. Geelong has a skill shortage in the manufacturing sector, a key industry for Geelong, so we applaud the support of our local manufacturers in addressing this need”, she said.

Each Scholarship recipient was presented with safety equipment required for on-the-job training including safety glasses, reflective vest and hard hat and will also receive $250 to be held in trust by their school for education purposes as part of the program.

Alcoa, GRVEC and the Geelong Manufacturing Council acknowledge the 17 local businesses who are supporting the 2008 Alcoa Future Leaders of Industry program - Geelong Fabrication, AGB Group, GD Manufacturing Engineers, Uptime Services Pty Ltd, Air Radiators Pty Ltd, Basell Australia Pty Ltd, Kempe International, Lakis Engineering Pty Ltd, Cameron & Castanedo Engineering Pty Ltd, Reid Engineering, ICD Asia Pacific, Barter Enterprises, Incitec Pivot, One Steel , Modern Olives, Worley Parsons and Wathaurong Glass and Arts PTY LTD.
