Update on Point Henry’s Carbon Bake Upgrade

As previously reported Alcoa Point Henry’s $89m carbon bake upgrade was completed on schedule and commissioning commenced on 2 November 2008.

The project included the installation of a new fume treatment centre called the carbon bake scrubber.
To further increase the reliability of the scrubber, a planned shutdown occurred on 13 & 14 May 2008 to allow key improvement and maintenance tasks to be undertaken in a safe manner. Major work competed included the installation of a new air skid to the cooling tower, and inspection and modification of duct work. The shutdown went two hours over schedule, due to a premature failure of the main air regulator, which has been replaced. The issue was rectified and corrective actions have been implemented. The Victorian EPA has been advised of this matter.
