Alcoa Point Henry & Anglesea volunteers celebrate 15,000 hours

In recognition of National Volunteers Week (May 12 – 17), the Alcoa Foundation has released figures revealing local Alcoa employees volunteered nearly 15,000 hours in the Geelong community last year.
To celebrate this milestone, Alcoa Point Henry volunteers are attending a recognition breakfast on Thursday 15 May.

In the Geelong region, 224 Alcoa Point Henry and Anglesea employees volunteered 14,626 hours in the local community in 2007, with their time matched by $US60,000 in grants to local groups.

Across Australia, a total of 1215 Alcoa employees volunteered 71,147 hours of time to the community last year, working on 639 local projects.

Alcoa Managing Director Alan Cransberg said that in addition to investing $6 million annually in community-based programs and partnerships across the country, the company saw supporting employee volunteering as an essential element of community contribution.

“Our people are our most valuable asset and the contribution they make in local communities is critical,” said Alcoa Managing Director Alan Cransberg.

“We have a global goal to see 40% of our people actively volunteering by 2020.  As a company we are extremely proud to see our people giving back and are pleased to support their efforts through our volunteer matching program, which provided $325,000 in grants last year.”

Alcoa’s volunteering program is formally supported through the Alcoa Foundation that matches employee volunteer time with grants to community organisations.

Alcoa Point Henry acting operations manager Stewart Esdale congratulated the Alcoa volunteers.

“Volunteers are the lifeblood of community organisations and we are proud to have such an engaged workforce who contribute so much to the community in which we live and work.” Mr Esdale said.

“Volunteering not only benefits the community but also our employees who get the opportunity to learn more about their community and to contribute in a practical way.  Alcoa values the volunteer efforts of our employees and is very glad to be able to recognise them at this special event,” he said.
Alcoa Foundation is a non-profit global corporate foundation with assets of approximately US$542 million. Its mission is to actively invest in the quality of life in Alcoa communities worldwide.
