Portland Aluminium volunteers celebrate 10,461 hours

In recognition of National Volunteers Week (May 12 – 17), the Alcoa Foundation has released figures revealing local Alcoa employees volunteered 10,461 hours in the Portland community last year.

To celebrate this milestone, Portland Aluminium volunteers are attending a recognition breakfast.

In the Portland region, 130 Portland Aluminium employees volunteered 10,461 hours in the local community in 2007, with their time matched by $US32,750 in grants to local community groups.

Across Australia, a total of 1215 Alcoa employees volunteered 71,147 hours of time to the community last year, working on 639 local projects.

Alcoa Managing Director Alan Cransberg said that in addition to investing $6 million annually in community-based programs and partnerships across the country, the company saw supporting employee volunteering as an essential element of community contribution.

“Our people are our most valuable asset and the contribution they make in local communities is critical,” said Alcoa Managing Director Alan Cransberg.

“We have a global goal to see 40% of our people actively volunteering by 2020.  As a company we are extremely proud to see our people giving back and are pleased to support their efforts through our volunteer matching program, which provided $325,000 in grants last year.”

Alcoa’s volunteering program is formally supported through the Alcoa Foundation that matches employee volunteer time with grants to community organisations.
