Update on Point Henry’s Carbon Bake Upgrade

As previously reported Alcoa Point Henry’s $89m carbon bake upgrade was completed on schedule and commissioning commenced on 2 November.

The carbon bake area is now back in full production after the gradual start-up of all four fires during the commissioning period. The fume treatment centre, called the carbon bake scrubber, was rebuilt and improved as part of the project. This replacement and upgrade was undertaken to assist Alcoa to deliver significant environmental improvements as a result of the majority of the structure being replaced with new improved components. The second round of stack testing on the carbon bake scrubber during the commissioning period was carried out in January 2008 whilst the carbon bakes were at full production levels. In line with the first round of results, the emissions coming out of the stack are significantly lower after the rebuild than they were before the rebuild – which continues to indicate a significantly improved operation. Other improvements expected as a result of the re-build are a decrease in scrubber downtime, the ability to perform online maintenance, a higher draft capacity and a reduction in required cleaning from three times per year to once.
