Carbon Bake Upgrade
Cransberg Says
November 14, 2007

Update on Point Henry’s Carbon Bake Upgrade

As previously reported Alcoa Point Henry’s $89m carbon bake upgrade was completed on schedule and commissioning commenced on 2 November.

During the first week of commissioning all four fires in the new furnace were started to gradually heat up and cure the new refractory.

The computer control programs have been monitored and modified to ensure good control.

On Tuesday 13th November a planned scrubber outage for between 7.30am and 12 noon experienced an unplanned 5hr 47min extension.

The outage was planned to enable the installation of sampling ports and also to test bypass situations as part of the scrubber hot commissioning.

Whilst this work was being carried out, a number of issues were experienced which resulted in the extended outage. Staff also took the opportunity to replace a faulty control valve that was a contributor to a bypass issue that occurred last week.

All EPA requested sampling ports were installed and inspections were carried out in a number of areas with no issues to report.

The Victorian EPA has been advised of this matter.
