Update on Point Henry’s Carbon Bake Upgrade

As previously reported Alcoa Point Henry’s $89m carbon bake upgrade was completed on schedule and commissioning commenced on 2 November.

During the first week of commissioning all four fires in the new furnace were started to gradually heat up and cure the new refractory.

The computer control programs have been monitored and modified to ensure good control.

On Friday 9th November and Monday 12th November, the scrubber went into bypass for 7 minutes and 6 minutes respectively. Both outages were a result of system malfunctions.

The issues were rectified immediately, with appropriate corrective actions implemented.

On Tuesday 13th November, a planned scrubber outage will take place between 8.00am and 12 noon. This outage is needed to enable the installation of sampling ports and also to test bypass situations as part of the scrubber hot commissioning.

The Victorian EPA has been advised of each of these matters.
