Inspired by burns survivor, Chris Doulis, Portland Aluminium employees are on track to deliver over $40,000 to the KIDS Foundation’s ‘Safety 4 KIDS Program’, by making their own workplace injury free. Introduced earlier this year, Portland Aluminium provides $1000 to the Safety 4 KIDS for each week that employees work injury free. An inspirational injury survivor, Chris has worked closely with the smelter’s safety team, using his story to deliver the critical message about the importance of safe behaviour. “I want to share my experience with others to prevent as many accidents as I can, said Chris. “I believe that all accidents are preventable and that safety is a value we all need to focus on in all aspects of our lives.” Chris’ presentations focus on his personal experience of surviving horrific burns in a childhood accident, and how the prevention of accidents is everyone’s personal responsibility. Portland Aluminium employees have been overwhelmingly supportive and responsive to Chris’ presentations and have enjoyed his honesty and openness. KIDS Foundation founder Susie O’Neill said the Safety 4 KIDS Program was a great way to reinforce workplace safety, whilst building opportunities to instil safety across the whole community, especially in children. “On an average day in Australia, 5000 children are injured and this funding is important to help change this alarming statistic", said Ms O’Neill. Ms O’Neill continued, “The funding provided by Portland Aluminium allows us to provide quality school and community based safety education programs that result in reducing preventable child injuries and death.” Portland Aluminium Operations Manager John Osborne said that the Safety 4 KIDS program has been embraced by all employees. “Chris has presented his personal and courageous story to Portland Aluminium employees and many contractor groups. His presence on site strengthens has inspired our people to continue to strive for an injury free workplace,” he said. Background KIDS Foundation/Alcoa Foundation partnership
