In recognition of his driving role in business arts partnership, Alcoa managing director Wayne Osborn has won the inaugural Leadership Award – Business, at the 2007 Western Australian Business and the Arts Partnership Awards (WABAPA).

Held in a gala ceremony last night at the Art Gallery of WA, the Awards were hosted by Culture and Arts Minister Sheila McHale to celebrate and encourage partnerships between the business and culture and arts sectors. This leadership award, presented by the WA Premier Alan Carpenter, recognised Mr Osborn’s outstanding stewardship and drive in fostering positive relations between the corporate and arts sector and his contribution to social sustainability through encouragement and support of WA's cultural landscape.
Speaking after the awards, Mr Osborn, who is also chairman of the WA chapter of the Australia Business Arts Foundation, said he was humbled by the accolade and that it was the artists themselves who truly deserved recognition for their creativity and committment, which was creating a more vibrant Western Australia. Mr Osborn explained Alcoa's goal of helping to connect communities to the arts through its cultural partnership portfolio, dubbed, 'Arts for Everyone', which focused on encouraging the community to engage in diverse, creative and innovative pursuits.
“The strongest communities are those with a sense of place and identity where all sectors can prosper,” he commented. “It is in all our interests to contribute to these communities, to ensure they attract and retain talented people, engagement in the arts is a key part of that process.” "We should be mindful of our responsibility to leave a legacy for future generations and part of that legacy should be a vibrant and creative community which allows successive generations to aspire to reach their full potential." Background on Wayne Osborn and Alcoa's arts partnerships: Wayne Osborn has spearheaded a strategic investment strategy for Alcoa to provide financial support to community arts organizations. Financial support through partnership is offered to the full spectrum of arts activities from high-end international art representing excellence to the community cultural development models that adopt a more grass-roots approach. A snap shot of the signature partnerships supported by Alcoa as a consequence of Wayne’s leadership include:
- access to internationally celebrated productions of the Perth
International Arts Festival, - broad community access to art through Sculpture by the Sea and
- support of a series of community cultural development workshops
- through the regional outreach programme of Fremantle Arts Centre.
